Housed at the Health Projects Center (HPC) located in Santa Cruz, the Central Coast AHEC works to increase the number of health professionals trained to care for the state’s rapidly growing geriatric population. The Central Coast AHEC trains Family Medicine residents from Natividad Medical Center and nursing students from Cabrillo College through clinical and community rotations, didactic learning and simulations. Health professionals from area community health centers also receive continuing education in chronic disease care and geriatrics.
HPC, established in 1980 as a 503(c) non-profit organization, offers health-related and social programs to health professionals, older adults and family caregivers. HPC exists to address the health and human needs of individuals, families and communities of California’s Central Coast by developing and implementing high quality programs and strategies. HPC serves different California regions, including Monterey, San Benito, Santa Cruz, and just recently expanding into San Luis Obispo County. It hosts the Central Coast AHEC, the Del Mar Caregiver Resource Center, the Multipurpose Senior Services Program, Enhanced Care Management Program, and Community Health Worker Program.
