EAST LOS ANGELES AHEC

AltaM Logo

Established in 1969, AltaMed stands as the largest federally qualified health center (FQHC) in the United States, and serves as the East Los Angeles AHEC (Area Health Education Center) site. AltaMed delivers medical services to communities across Southern California with a network of more than 70 accredited health centers and service facilities.
AltaMed’s Workforce Development team oversees a variety of programs to strengthen our healthcare employment pipeline under the AHEC scope of work.

Academic Partnerships:

AltaMed proudly partners with more than 95 colleges, universities, and trade schools to prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals. Each year, we host over 300 student learners, across multiple departments, including AHEC Scholars completing their clinical hour requirements.

The East Los Angeles –AHEC (ELAC AHEC) Scholars Program welcomes applications from all eligible academic degree programs. AHEC Scholar applications are reviewed on a continuous basis, offering aspiring professionals the opportunity to join our program year-round.

Professional Development:

At AltaMed, we live by our core value, “Employees are our most valuable asset.”  This commitment drives us to strengthen and grow our workforce through strategic partnerships and innovative initiatives, like the Employee Career Development Program.

The program empowers both clinical and non-clinical employees with opportunities to advance their careers through personalized coaching, interactive workshops, and goal-focused planning.  Participants are encouraged to explore new academic degrees, enhance their existing skills, and prepare for their next professional milestone.

We believe in fostering growth, unlocking potential, and supporting every employee on their journey to success.

Community Outreach

Through our partnership with UnidosUS, AltaMed proudly supports two dynamic programs designed to guide students on their path to healthcare:

  • Escalera – A high school outreach program offering pre-college support and career exploration for students interested in healthcare professions.
  • Avanzando – A college-level initiative that provides a cohort of 23 first- and second-year students with resources and mentorship as they pursue degrees in pre-health fields.

These programs help students inspire confidence, expand knowledge, and helps students take meaningful steps toward a future in healthcare.
